Canadian of the Month
It’s a phone, it’s a company, it’s a dictionary entry. In its heyday - the 2000s - it was also a fashion accessory, a source of national pride, and an addiction (yes, the “CrackBerry”). The queen even worked quality control once at its global headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario (how often do you hear that phrase?). In short, it is a Canadian institution. And now it is on life support.
Incredulously, in a very unCanadian move, Rogers Wireless was not even going to throw BB a lifeline and carry its latest incarnation, the Z30, until public outcry made them reverse this decision. And with the current pro-business federal government also not lifting a finger to help, one glimmer of hope for BB is the fact that, in the midst of a flurry of ideas and potential business offers this past month to save the company, two of the founding RIMmers, Michael Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin, are planning to takeover the struggling Canadian icon. It seems their plan is just crazy enough to work. And since Apple phones seem to be losing their sparkle, maybe the time is ripe for Lazaridis to make BB rise again. (Fingers crossed.)
So, because of its very Canadian resilience and refusal to die in the face of fierce competition from such shiny objects as Apple and Android, we proudly name BlackBerry™ Canadian of the Month™.
